The Daffodil Principle

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mother, you must come see the daffodils before they are over.” I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. “I will come next T uesday”, I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see bad enough to drive another inch!”

My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this all the time, Mother.”

“Well, you won’t get me back on the road until it clears, and then I’m heading for home!” I assured her.

“I was hoping you’d take me over to the garage to pick up my car.”

“How far will we have to drive?” “Just a few blocks,” Carolyn said. “I’ll drive. I’m used to this.” After several minutes, I had to ask, “Where are we going? This isn’t the way to the garage!”

“We’re going to my garage the long way,” Carolyn smiled, “by way of the daffodils.” “Carolyn,” I said sternly, “please turn around.”

“It’s all right, Mother, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand lettered sign that read, “Daffodil Garden.”

We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight! It looked
as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it down over the mountain peak and slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns-great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, white, lemon
yellow, salmon pink, saffron, and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted as a group so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers.

“But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn.

“It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “She lives on the property. That’s her home.” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house.

On the patio, we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You are asking” was the headline.

The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs,” it read.

The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”

There it was, The Daffodil Principle.

For me, that moment was a life-changing experience.

I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun-one bulb at a time-to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountaintop. Still, just planting one bulb at a time,
year after year, had changed the world. This unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of ineffable (indescribable) magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.

The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time–often just one baby-step at a time—and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time.

When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world.

“It makes me sad in a way,” I admitted to Carolyn.

“What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it ‘one bulb at a time’ through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!”

My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. “Start tomorrow,” she said. It’s so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, “How can I put this to use today?”

Do what is set before you to do! There is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and, dance like no one’s watching.

What does it mean to you? In your life?

Sometimes it’s FEAR.

Fear of what? What would really happen to you if you tried and it didn’t work out as planned?

Recently I heard a great quote about limitations.

I liked it because we DO tend to talk about what we CAN’T Do too much.

We argue the point and it gets us nowhere.

Think about it in your life and be totally honest with yourself.

As a small business consultant, I have worked with hundreds of good people who really struggle with getting things done.

Most of them are always busy doing things that are important and maybe not so important.

We have all used “to do lists” and possibly been to seminars teaching us time management skills and other effective tricks.
For the small business owner in particular, everything seems like it needs done today and even if you get a good bit done, was it the best use of our time?

When it comes to getting your business on the internet, your website has many components. You have design your site or choose a designer, you need good copy, pictures taken of products and uploaded, you need autoresponders if you want to have an automatic ongoing relationship with those who visit your site and you need someone concentrating on traffic, getting prospects to your site.
And that’s not everything but you get the point.

Here is what I discovered.

Most good things in life are simple and this no different. We have been told in many ways that we can’t do two things well at the same time. Some people would argue with that claiming to multi-taskers and there are some things you can do at the same time but when it comes to important elements of you business, doing one thing at a time is the best way to go.

So, here is what to do.

Pick the very first thing that is needed get the job done. In other words, stay in the order that is needed to move to the immediate next step. Even if you like doing another step more or it is easier, resist the urge to jump ahead.
Sounds simple and it is when you put the order down on paper but sticking with it is where you will have to have the discipline.
Every time you are working on something, ask yourself if you are working out of order or in order.
It’s not a secret and it’s not new but it is common sense when you think about it. You can do it, I know you can and watch your projects get done it record time!

Today I was in a meeting of about 20 professional sales people. Some successful and others not so successful.

Here Is The One Minute Sales Training…..

Those who took action more often were most successful!!!!!!!

That didn’t even take 60 seconds. Read it again.

One salesman said he was training another one and showing him how he hands out flyers.

When they stopped the car to each get out and hand some flyers out, the trainee said

“I’ll Just Wait In The Car”

Wait in the car??? How did he think he was going to make any contacts?

So even if you don’t know for sure that your action will get results,
there is a good chance some kind of action is better
than no action at all!!

Go to it, my friend.

Recently I was out on a prospecting call. As soon as they small businees owner saw that I was not there to buy anything from him, he quickly said he was not interested.

Not Interested In What?

This small minded small business owner had no idea how offensive he was. He was purely self centered and had just one thought….what I was going to buy from him.

Do you think I will be buying anything from him? Or referring anyone to him?

What Could He Have Done?

He could have politely told me that he was happy with who he was using or any number of respectful ways to thank me for coming in but heis decision is final.

He was so quick on the draw that he hardly knew what I was even there to talk to him about at another time.

Treat everyone as you would want to be treated and you can gain new business without spending a dime.

Recently I went into a jewelry retail store with a client who wanted to put a small amount of brochures in the store to promote his business. He was also in the market to possibly buy some jewelry for his wife. The owner showed him some nice pieces and my client talked about bringing his wife to the store for her to look around.

The store was empty of customers and the jewelry was expensive. She needed all the customers she could get.

When my client, who I was training, asked if he could put a few brochures somewhere in the store she quickly said, No, I don’t want anything like that in my store.

Well, that didn’t exactly make my client want to rush his wife to the store to fill this owner’s pockets with their money.

Needless to say, the owner lost a very good prospect and potential long term customer. We will never know how much income was lost, but it was some amount and how many other prospects has this lady turned off? One is too many.

Here is a few lessons that can be learned from this situation. First, treat everyone with the highest of respect, especially vendors trying to sell you something. They see many people in the course of a week. Do you want them saying negative things about the way they were treated?
Next, be on the look out on how you can help others. Allowing my client to leave a few brochures in her store would not have caused her any harm and possibly helped him a great deal.
And finally, follow the golden rule. It’s not that hard. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Practice every opportunity to find ways to be kind and generous, there is never a bad time to do it.

Life is tough and even those who wish to “look on the bright side” still get rained upon. And even when it appears that you are doing all that you know to receive the desired outcome and it still doesn’t come, what are we to think? Is it us? Are we expecting too much? Too little? Lazy? Working too hard at it? God doesn’t like me anymore? Guilt of some kind?

Did the cards get dealt to me with an unfair deck? Or maybe I am just destined to struggle?

As you can see, there are many ways to think about “why”.

But did you notice one thing?

Look again at the possibilities…..All my thoughts about my particular problem are negative. Amazing isn’t it? We naturally think this way and I could give you my well thought out reason for this but that is not the point of this article.

So, what can we do to instantly make change take place?

There’s good news and bad news. Actually, there is good news and more good news if you can follow along with me.

The truth is we have a challenge that appears to be hanging around much too long and it’s not what we asked for…or is it?

Let’s first look at what we asked for. And let’s say for fun we wanted to be a great teacher. You prayed to God and asked for just this one request. You wanted to be remembered for being a really great teacher.

Several teaching jobs become available and you jump at the chance only to watch another person get the job. And this goes on for much longer than is in your plans. Is this a good thing or a “not so good of a thing?”

Most of us know how a valuable pearl is refined. A whole lot of friction from the sand constantly rubbing up against it with no end in site. The poor little pearl has no idea if it will ever get out of its misery. It might even think its good enough at a certain point and just want to be done with the whole process.
But on and on it goes and then finally, one day it’s made into a very fine necklace and gracefully lying upon the skin of a beautiful women for all to admire. It paid the price, even when it didn’t want to.

If we could know now that the outcome would be exactly what we thought was best for us and it came exactly when WE thought was the best timing, do you really think we are that smart to know all this? I know I’m not.

So here’s what I do….

I make a decision that I am being watched over and there is a perfect plan for my life and for the issue I am dealing with. I choose to believe that whatever challenge that comes my way, is some form of sand working on me to prepare me for the position in life that I want, or believe that is best for me. So, while I am waiting and the sand keeps on rolling over me and it’s quite painful on many occasions, I can be thankful for that “friction” that is making into the great teacher that I wanted to be.

Actually, the more friction, the better if I want to be the best. In fact, “bring it on” as fast as possible so that I can be created and refined through all trials as quickly as possible so that when my opportunity comes, I am truly ready. The little pearl thought he was ready many, many times but he wasn’t. He didn’t know what he didn’t know.

I think we are like that too. So, whatever you are facing or have been facing, the very best way to succeed through it is believe now, believe today that the friction rubbing against you is exactly what you need and have asked for if you want a goal to go beyond “average”.

Your thoughts and your actions can be all negative just like the way this article started out or you can make a choice to pick out the 500 to 1000 things that are going great for you right this very moment.

Just to get you started let’s list just a few. And if you have anything over 50% of this small list, you are pretty darn fortunate.

You are still breathing
Most arms and legs still connected
Can smell a rose
Can see a sunrise
Able to hear beautiful music
Ah, the taste of your favorite food
[You don’t take any of these for “granted” do you?] A quick test to see if you do is asking yourself if you thanked your God today for them. Did you? Whoops.

Ok, a few more and then I’ll let the rest up to you.

Are you currently living inside a dwelling?
Any food recently? [Within the last few days]
Any money at all coming in?
Is there anyone who loves you? How many?
Could you smile right now if you wanted to?
Is it possible to make someone else happy right now with a kind word?

Ok, I think you see where we can go with all of this. It all comes down to a choice. Your choice. You are in total control. You choose to think and act the way you decide. No one does it for you.

So what does it really take? Well, it does require a conscious decision. You do have to want it and it takes courage. This world will pull you down and it will pull hard and often.

The question is, Are you going to let it rule you or are you deciding today and every day that you are the decision maker in your life?

I wish you all the success and to have the courage each day as the friction of the sand shapes you into the “pearl” you are becoming.
Embrace each obstacle, knowing that you are on your way to your destiny!

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a
well. The animal cried piteously for hours as
the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the
well needed to be covered up anyway;
it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and
help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began
to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the
donkey realized what was happening and cried
horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he
quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally
looked down the well. He was astonished at what
he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his
back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farm er’s neighbors continued to shovel
dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it
off and take a step up.

Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey
stepped up over the edge of the well and
happily trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds
of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well
is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of
our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out
of the deepest wells just by not stopping,
never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.

Free your mind from worries - Most never happen.

Live simply and appreciate what you have.

Give more.

Expect less

NOW …….

Enough of that crap. The donkey later came back,
and bit the farmer who had tried to bury him.
The gash from the bite got infected and
the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.

MORAL FROM TODAY’S LESSON:

When you do something wrong, and try to cover
it up, it always comes back to bite you.
